Michael Schumacher says that his three years with Mercedes have made him "much more open" despite not delivering success.

Having returned to Formula One at the start of 2010 as the most successful driver ever, Schumacher only added one podium to his record as Mercedes struggled to be competitive. However, Schumacher said that the challenging three years had helped him develop as a person even though he wished results had been better.

"It has been an interesting time as a human in particular," Schumacher told RTL. "As a human if you can go through difficult times and you can sustain and you can actually grow and develop yourself still that is what makes you even stronger. And that's what I feel; I feel like a much more mature person, much more open, much more easygoing than I ever have been before with maybe not having the success that I was wishing for."

Schumacher also said that he had been learning constantly throughout his time in Formula One right up until his final race.

"I always learn, and I always learn from any driver that is in the paddock because I will analyse every person, every little detail, as much as I can to see what they're doing different to what I do in order then to keep on improving. Because Formula One is all about a constant improvement in every little area, it's not about suddenly somebody makes one thing completely different; it's lots of little details that as a combination make the bigger picture."
