Massa hit with grid penalty after gearbox damage in crash
Felipe Massa will face a five-place grid penalty at the Monaco Grand Prix after Ferrari had to replace his gearbox following a crash in final practice.
Massa locked his font tyres on the run down to St Devote, clouting the wall on the entry to the corner and coming to a rest against the barriers in the run-off zone. All four corners of the car appeared damaged and Ferrari is in a race against time to get the car back on track before the end of the first qualifying session.
Part of the repairs involve replacing a damaged gearbox, which means Massa will incur a five-place grid drop from wherever he qualifies. An hour before the session Ferrari was working away on its car behind closed garage doors and a wall built up from spare tyres in their blankets.
