Alcott leads Britain's Sochi 2014 contingent

Chemmy Alcott is set for her fourth Winter Olympic Games after being selected to represent Team GB in Sochi next month.

The 31-year-old alpine skier was a doubt after breaking her leg for a third time in August but has been named in the squad of 56 athletes - the biggest British squad since the 1988 Games in Calgary.

Alcott became the first Briton to win a run in a World Cup at Soelden in 2008 and finished in 11th place at both Turin 2006 and Vancouver 2010, and makes the squad despite not having the chance to compete since recovering from her injury.

Amy Williams' skeleton gold in 2010 was Great Britain's only medal in Vancouver but UK Sport has set Team GB a target of winning a minimum of three in Sochi, and the squad is bolstered by the likes of exciting young freestyle skiers James Woods and Katie Summerhayes.

Team GB's women's curling team are perhaps the strongest contenders for a medal - the Eve Muirhead-lead team are current world champions and picked up silver at the European Championships in November.

Other medal prospects for Team GB include skeleton's World Cup leader Lizzy Yarnold and world champion Shelley Rudman, as well as speed skater Elise Christie.

"Team GB hasn't taken a bigger contingent of skiers and snowboarders to an Olympic Winter Games for over two decades - since 1992 - so it is great to now have 19 of them heading out to Sochi with us shortly," Team GB's Chef de Mission Mike Hay said.

"What makes it even more exciting is the fact that we are going into Sochi with a number of athletes with medal potential in events new to the Olympic Programme."
