British skier Chemmy Alcott could be out for the rest of the season after breaking her leg in a skiing accident in Canada.

On the eve of the opening World Cup downhill race in Lake Louise, Alcott was airlifted to hospital after crashing at high speed during a training session. Alcott landed heavily after a jump and slid down the mountain.

She was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Banff, where she underwent surgery.

"Thank you everyone for everything," Alcott wrote on her Twitter feed. "Insane that something that brings you so much pleasure can also bring so much pain."

"It was brutal and the impact was serious. She broke her shin and another bone could be fractured in her right leg," said race director John Cassel.
