WBA light-welterweight champion Amir Khan has been advised to take four months of rest after being struck down by a mystery illness.

Khan was rushed to hospital at the weekend after complaining of a high temperature, prompting fears that he had contracted malaria on a recent trip to South Africa.

He was declared clear of any viral infection, but medics were unable to point to the specific cause of his ailment.

His business manager, Asif Vali, said: "Amir has been told by doctors to rest up as much as possible. He has had a pretty tough schedule this year. He was also out in South Africa watching the World Cup and did extensive travelling getting to games."

The four-month break should not stop Khan fulfilling his next scheduled fight, which is expected to be against either Juan Diaz or Juan Manuel Marquez on December 11.

Khan was last in action on May 15, when he put on an impressive showing in his first bout Stateside by stopping New Yorker Paulie Malignaggi.
