Ennis sets British record in Glasgow

World heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis got her season off to a flying start, beating world champion Lolo Jones in the 60m hurdles in the Aviva International Athletics in Glasgow.

The newly appointed Great Britain captain led by example as she ran a superb race to set a new British record of 7.95. Ennis, whose previous personal best was 8.12, beat Sarah Claxton's existing record by one hundredth of a second. Ennis went on to finish second in the high jump competition, jumping a personal best of 1.94m and equalling American Chaunte Howard's best jump, but came second as she more attempts.

"I love coming to these events but I never expect to win because they are individual events," Ennis said. "But to win and to break a British record is really something special."

World bronze medallist Jenny Meadows showed her winter training in South Africa had paid off with a dominant performance in the 800m. Meadows crossed the line in 2:02.54, beating second-placed Neisha Bernard Thomas by over two seconds.

"I thought I was in good shape, maybe a little race rusty," she said. "I came out here and got a wonderful reception from the crowd and I was really excited. This is what I train for, it was great to get the plaudits here today and I enjoyed every minute."

Craig Pickering had an impressive victory in the men's 60m, but Lisa Dobriskey was disappointed to finish second in the women's 1500m after she was unable to hold off a late charge from Heidi Dahl. British sprinter Leon Baptiste enjoyed victory in the men's 200m, beating 2004 Olympic medallist Shawn Crawford, while Helen Clitheroe took victory in the women's 3000m.
