England had to settle for silver in the mixed doubles badminton as Malaysian pair Koo Kien Keat and Chin Eei Hui saw off Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork in straight sets.

The English pair started strongly and lost the first set by the narrowest of margins before losing their way in the second set to lose 22-20 22-12, with Robertson perhaps distracted by his other upcoming gold medal match in the men's doubles.

However, it was double heartbreak for Robertson, who was forced to settle for a second silver medal after he and partner Anthony Clark fell 21-19 21-14 to Malaysia's Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong. It was also silver for Rajiv Ouseph, who was beaten by top seed and defending champion Lee Chong Wei 21-10 21-8 in the men's singles.

Three defeats in as many finals on the ultimate day of action condemned England to third place in the medals table. Saina Nehwal's victory in the women's singles sealed India's 38th gold medal, one more than England to seal second spot. Australia topped the medals table with 74 gold medals, while Scotland were tenth with nine gold medals.

England's men suffered a second heartbreaking penalty shootout loss in the hockey bronze medal match after drawing 3-3 with New Zealand in normal time.

Adam Dixon was the unfortunate culprit of the only miss of the shootout as New Zealand nailed all five of their shots to get amongst the medals. England had fought back from 3-1 with two late goals in the second half from Simon Mantell, who completed his hat-trick with the third, to force extra time.

In the gold medal match, Australia defended their Commonwealth title with an 8-0 thrashing of hosts India.

England made up for the disappointment of missing out on a place in the netball final with a consolatory bronze medal. Louisa Brownfield converted 31 of her 34 attempts at goal as England enjoyed a comfortable 70-47 victory over Jamaica.

In the gold medal match, New Zealand triumphed in a tense thriller to defend their Commonwealth title. The Silver Ferns threw away a five goal advantage in the final quarter as Australia clawed their way back to 47-47 to force extra time, but a nail-biting 15 minutes could separate the teams and Maria Tutaia finally sealed a 66-64 win in sudden death overtime.

Kenya claimed gold in both the men's and women's Commonwealth Games marathons but not without a hint of controversy in the women's event.

Both races were run early on the final day of competition to avoid the worst of the stifling Delhi heat and eventual women's winner Irene Kosgei was involved in an incident at a drinks station early in her race as another competitor accidentally tripped her over.

An official ran to Kosgei and lifted her to her feet, a case of outside assistance not allowed in marathon running, but as the race continued it was deemed not to have affected the outcome of the event and Kosgei was allowed to continue. Continue she did as she led home compatriot Irene Mogake for a Kenyan 1-2 and Australia's Lisa Weightman in bronze.

The men's race also went the way of the Africans as John Kelai claimed a comfortable victory ahead of Australia's Michael Shelley in silver and yet another Kenyan, Amos Matui, in bronze. England's Michelle Cope finished sixth in the women's race while Andi Jones pulled out of the men's event just short of halfway with a hamstring niggle.

Frankie Jones won silver for Wales in the rhythmic gymnastics hoop final. Jones scored 24.750 points to finish behind Malaysia's Elaine Koon.
