European and Commonwealth champion Fran Halsall is confident she will be fit for the World Championship trials in Manchester after undergoing surgery on her ankle.

Halsall has been forced to miss winter training after going under the knife to repair an ongoing ankle injury. She plans to return to training at the beginning of January and although she is confident of returning to full fitness, she is aware she may not be at her peak by the beginning of March.

"I should be ready to swim and have everything sorted to start swimming again at the beginning of January," Halsall told the Southport Visiter. "So I'll then have January, February and part of March until the trials. I'll definitely be in shape to compete, but it just depends on what the ankle will let me do.

"I went over on my ankle just over a year ago and it had been niggling me all the time. I kept having to get MRI scans on it and injections ahead of trials and championships so I could compete.

"I had to consider if I would leave it and accept I would need to take weeks off every so often to recover, or have an operation. If I do this now I shouldn't have any disruption leading up to London 2012."
