Having overcome a serious hamstring injury which ruled him out of the Blues' 2009 Super 14 season, Stanley proved his fitness with a good shift as skipper of Auckland during the NPC. In 2010 he nailed down his place in the Blues' midfield during a mixed camapign, with his form enough to win All Black selection for June Tests against Ireland and Wales. With incumbent second-five Ma'a Nonu out injured he started all three Tests. Stanley possesses plenty of rugby heritage as nephew of All Black Joe Stanley, while his family can also claim another All Black in centre Jeremy and Kiwi league representative in Chase.
