All Black fly-half Dan Carter has undergone successful surgery on a niggling ankle problem and should be back in action in time for their end-of-year tour.

The Crusaders playmaker opted to go under the knife to clear up the long-standing problem after helping New Zealand clinch the Tri-Nations title with a thrilling victory over South Africa in Soweto last Saturday.

All Blacks doctor Deb Robinson said that Carter would be in a cast for 10 days but should be able to resume light rehabilitation in two weeks.

"I've spoken to both the surgeon and to Dan, and the surgeon was really happy with the way things went," Robinson told The Press newspaper in Christchurch. "He removed loose bodies from the back of the ankle and he also had one on the inside of the ankle which came out easily as well.

"He was certainly happy with the way the rest of the joint looked, not too much wear and tear, and also the ligaments were in good condition. So, overall we're really pleased with that outcome."

The All Blacks begin their tour against Australia in Hong Kong on October 30, with Hurricanes youngster Aaron Cruden set to wear No.10 in their final Tri-Nations fixture against Australia in Sydney on September 11.
