David Beckham remained on course for a place at London 2012 after the former England captain was named in Team GB manager Stuart Pearce's 80-man shortlist.

Pearce has whittled down his initial long list of 191 players to just 80, with LA Galaxy's Beckham surviving the cut alongside the likes of Joe Cole and Welsh pair Craig Bellamy and Gareth Bale.

All four home nations have representation, with Wolves' Scottish striker Steven Fletcher and Northern Ireland and West Brom midfielder Chris Brunt also making the shortlist.

Beckham, who was part of the bid team that successfully brought the Olympics to the capital, is hoping to be named as one of three over-age picks when the final 18-man squad is named at the end of May.

Pearce is due to talk about his plans for Team GB next week, when the draw for the competition takes place at Wembley on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere ruled himself out of contention for the squad.
