The 34-year-old stormed through to claim victory in a time of 47.63 seconds to regain the title he won eight years ago in Athens.

Greene, who scraped into the final as a fastest loser, produced a late charge to move up into fourth, but was unable to snatch a medal as he finished behind American Michael Tinsley and Javier Culson.

It was the first 200m that ultimately cost Greene as he took time to find his rhythm, eventually coming to life in the latter half of the race. His time, 48.24, was 0.14s short of Culson in third, and just 0.01s ahead of Angelo Taylor in fifth.

The world champion had been bidding to become the first British athlete since Sally Gunnell to win all four major titles, having won gold at the 2010 European and Commonwealth Games, but remains without an Olympic medal.

Greene had been struggling for form this season following an injury which disrupted his winter training, but he displayed a return to form in the weeks prior to the Games. Culson had been expected to be Greene's biggest rival for gold, but the Puerto Rican only managed bronze as Sanchez surged to victory in a world leading time to become the oldest champion in the history of the event.
