Greene came into the Games in the form of his life and was viewed as one of GB's main hopes for gold. But he could not repeat his personal best run of 47.84 in Paris last month and after scraping into the final, he was a laboured fourth.

The 26-year-old looked to be lacking any spark as his renowned kick in the final 70m that has taken him to world, European and Commonwealth glory never materialised and he has admitted the well was dry.

"I gave it everything but was just too tired," Greene said. "I ran a personal best a couple of weeks ago but I think I was lacking some endurance and I was found wanting a little bit.

"Coming into the championships, it felt as though I was good enough to get gold - certainly a medal. But I was very fatigued going into the race.

"Saturday's semi took a lot out of me physically and mentally. I've never been in that situation before.

"I rallied tonight and put in a good performance but was just found wanting at the end. That extra bit just wasn't there tonight so it was bitterly disappointing."
