Leicester fly-half Toby Flood is set to miss the start of the Tigers' Heineken Cup campaign after being ruled out for up to two months with a knee injury.

The England fly-half was forced from the field in Leicester's opening Aviva Premiership defeat to Northampton at Franklin's Gardens on Sunday and later scans confirmed a medial ligament strain.

Leicester begin their bid for European honours against Magners League new-boys Benetton Treviso at the Stadio Comunale di Monigo on October 9, with a home tie against the Scarlets following a week later.

Jeremy Staunton deputised for Flood following his withdrawal against Northampton and is set to continue this weekend as Exeter visit Welford Road. Seventeen-year-old George Ford is their only other playmaking option following Sam Vesty's summer move to Bath.

News of Flood's layoff could also impact on England manager Martin Johnson's plans for the November internationals after Flood succeeded Jonny Wilkinson as first-choice stand-off in the latter stages of last season. Flood has started England's last three Tests ahead of Wilkinson, including June's win over Australia in Sydney.
