London Wasps have confirmed that club officials will meet this week with Shaun Edwards to discuss his future as head coach.

The former rugby league star, who has been combining his role at Adams Park with that of Wales' defence coach since 2007, signed a new two-year contract with the Aviva Premiership outfit earlier this year.

However, with his contract with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) now expired and Dai Young have revamped the Wasps coaching staff following his arrival from Cardiff this summer, Edwards admitted after Friday's Rugby World Cup third-place play-off that he expects to be a free agent after he returns home.

Wasps have yet to confirm Edwards' departure but a club spokesman indicated to The Telegraph that his position within the club will be discussed when both parties meet later this week.

"Shaun signed a new two-year deal with Wasps earlier this year, so he is contracted to the club," he said. "However, it was always our intention to sit down with him when he returned from the World Cup. That is what we will do this week."

Edwards has been heavily linked with England but it is also thought that the Cardiff Blues are now keen to bring him to the Welsh capital.
