Leicester Tigers No.8 Thomas Waldrom has signed a new contract with the Welford Road side.

The New Zealand-born back-row arrived at the Tigers ahead of the 2010-11 Aviva Premiership season and has since accrued 50 appearances for Richard Cockerill's side. Waldrom scooped the Rugby Players' Association Player of the Year award in his first season with the Tigers and also marked it with a late call up to England's squad for the 2011 World Cup.

And Cockerill is delighted that the influential back-row has opted to stay at the Tigers. Cockerill said: "Thomas has fitted in very well here. We knew he was a very good player when we first brought him to the club and he has developed well in his time with us.

"He brings some different qualities to the back-row combinations in the squad and we think he'll continue to get better and better working within the Tigers environment. We're looking forward to seeing him continue to play an important role within the squad and I'm delighted he has agreed to stay."

Waldrom added: "I've really enjoyed my rugby with Leicester over the last two seasons and I am very happy to agree a new contract. I have a lot to thank the club for because I would not have got where I am now without Leicester Tigers.

"Everyone at the club has helped me and my family settle in the area, and the supporters have been great to me. Now I'm looking forward to the rest of the season and we just want to make the most of our opportunities."
