Ricciardo: I'm here to win races
Red Bull new boy Daniel Ricciardo insists he is determined "not be a one-hit wonder" as he sets about trying to establish a regular place at the front of the Formula One grid.
The Australian has stepped up from sister team Toro Rosso for 2014, replacing compatriot Mark Webber, but faces the daunting task of racing alongside reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel - who has won the last four titles and is racing to equal Michael Schumacher's record of five in a row.
Ricciardo, who will step into the RB10 on days three and four in Jerez, admits he is happy to learn behind Vettel, but that he also wants to establish himself as a genuine rival to his German team-mate.
"I haven't set any expectations in terms of where I want to finish," Ricciardo said.
"If someone said you'll be world champion, would you be happy with that? Of course I would. I think just for me to get that first win would be amazing, but just to go through the year continuing to learn and to try and match Seb at least at some point and really set myself up at the front of the grid, not to be a one hit wonder so to speak.
"Obviously for me I would love to be as competitive as soon as possible and learn what I can from Seb. I'm not going to sit here and say 'I'm going to come out in Melbourne and win and then back it up in Malaysia', or wherever we are next.
"I'll let the results do the talking but right now I've got nothing to back up my talks so I've got to stay humble."
Webber, the man Ricciardo is replacing at Red Bull, had a well-documented feud with Vettel over what he felt was team favouritism towards the German. But Ricciardo is not worried about a repeat and believes the team will stay true to their word on the promise of equal treatment.
"I don't expect to be treated like God , I'm not the world champion, but at the same time I've been reassured that I'm going to get the equal side, the same length straw, whatever you want to say.
"I have to earn my place in the team as well so it's good to know if we're going to have some equal stuff."
