Daniel Ricciardo was taken by surprise at the news his Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel will leave at the end of the year.

Vettel announced on Saturday that he would quit the team as he heads for Ferrari in 2015, making Ricciardo the senior driver at Red Bull when Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat will join him. Ricciardo has had the upperhand this year over Vettel but was not expecting the four-time champion to leave so soon.

"I was a little bit surprised but I think that he has achieved enough here, and he wants to move on," Ricciardo said.

Team boss Christian Horner said he has no concerns about Ricciardo taking over responsibility as the lead driver.

"As Mr [Dietrich] Mateschitz would say, no risk, no fun," Horner said. "I think we've demonstrated in Daniel Ricciardo this year we've got a world class driver.

"What he's demonstrated has been phenomenal on track and in Daniil Kvyat we've got a really exciting young prospect for the future in just the same way that Sebastian Vettel was. Giving these youngsters a chance - they're the next generation."
