Adrian Newey will get the chance to conquer sailing's prestigious America's Cup after Red Bull announced its technology division will team up with Olympic legend Ben Ainslie next year.

Red Bull Advanced Technology (RBAT) is one of the new projects Newey is fronting after signing a new three-year deal to work on projects alongside Formula One from 2015 onwards. Technical guru Newey, who has orchestrated success at Williams, McLaren and Red Bull, stepped away from a full-time role in Formula One after rejecting the overtures of Ferrari earlier this year and growing disillusioned with F1's restrictive regulations.

An announcement on Thursday confirmed RBAT will link up with Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR), the team fronted by the four-time Olympic champion, ahead of the 35th America's Cup in 2017.

A BAR statement said: "BAR are really excited to be partnering with Red Bull Advanced Technologies. We are in a unique position in this country, and this campaign is about assimilating the very best of British in design and engineering - RBAT epitomises this."

BAR's website states its aim is to "bring the America's Cup home to Great Britain". Ainslie was part of the Oracle Team USA which won the cup in 2013.
