Vettel focussed on beating Webber
The relationship between the Red Bull team-mates has become increasingly strained this season with Webber airing his views on team favouritism over the radio after winning the British Grand Prix. The Australian complained that Vettel had received preferential treatment when the team gave Vettel the new front wing from his car.
A frosty truce has since been established but Vettel said his main aim was still to beat his team-mate because every driver is an egotist.
"The team is the priority ... In the end the pecking order is led by the faster man ... Every driver is an egotist because you go down in Formula One if you aren't," Vettel told Der Spiegel magazine in Germany. "The team-mate is the first you want to beat because he has the same equipment."
Vettel added that his relationship with Webber is not a close one and that he would continue to seek ways of getting an advantage.
"There is always a certain distance. We work together in certain areas to bring the team forward and to further develop the car. But apart from that everyone is focused on himself and seeks his own advantage."
Vettel currently lies fourth in the drivers' standings behind Webber going into his home German Grand Prix and he made it clear that the title is his aim.
"I have no joy in being an also-ran. I need this self-affirmation that I am better than the others."
