Mark Webber has admitted that he needs to win another race this season to help seal the title and cannot just settle for podiums.

He currently leads Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel by 14 points, but two consecutive second place finishes behind one of those drivers would leave him level on points going into the season finale. Since Webber's last win at the Hungarian Grand Prix he has finished on the podium three times, but Alonso, Vettel and Lewis Hamilton have all taken race wins.

Webber has now recognised the need to up his game in the coming races.

"I need to win again in the future," he said. "I'm very confident I can do that, and that would be beneficial, of course, but also reliability can still yet play a role, many things, circumstances, lots of different things. There are 75 points to go. Obviously these guys have a bit less because they're a few behind, but in the end, confident."

He said he had not picked out a main title rival yet, as the favourite to challenge him is changing race-to-race.

"Two weeks ago it was Lewis, then it was Fernando," he said. "It's chopping and changing, but the most important thing is that the gap is going the right way. I need to keep it like that. We've got three races to go and it's a good result for me. Five of us are capable of winning races - well, four in the dry, Jenson's had a few races in the wet conditions but in the dry conditions it's been four of us who can win."

But his title rivals are also confident, with Alonso suggesting Webber will slip up by saying one win is all he needs to take the title in his Ferrari.

"We are convinced that this was the worst track of the remaining races for us," Alonso said after finishing third in Japan. "To be world champion I need one more win and two podiums."

Vettel admitted that another Webber win would severely dent his title chances, but said he felt he had the measure of his team-mate at Suzuka and could do the same at the remaining races.

"His 14 point lead is of course an advantage," Vettel said. "If he wins again, it will be difficult for all of us. But anything can still happen.

"Without sounding arrogant, I would say I always had Mark under control. I could see him all the time. He was one, two or three seconds behind. Every time he came a bit closer, I went on the gas a bit more. It's looking okay. If I win the next three races, everything will be fine, so that must be my goal."
