Kubica ready to fight for his comeback

Renault has announced that Robert Kubica is "ready to fight for his comeback" after taking the news about his condition well.

Kubica suffered severe arm injuries when he crashed his rally car during an event last weekend and has undergone surgery to save his right arm. According to a press release on Tuesday afternoon, his general condition is continuing to improve and his arm is reacting as doctors expected.

He will undergo more surgery on Thursday to tend to fractures in his right shoulder and foot before another operation three or four days later to stabilise his fractured elbow. He has been visited by his family as well as his friends Fernando Alonso, Tonio Liuzzi and Flavio Briatore.

The press release added: "Robert will remain at the Santa Corona Hospital for two to three weeks. A decision will then be taken about where he should go in order to continue his rehabilitation."

The full length of his recovery is still unknown with estimations varying from five months to a year.

The latest photos of the accident's aftermath show the severity of the crash, with a guardrail piercing the length of Kubica's Skoda Fabia. According to some reports the Pole lost five pints of blood while being extracted from the car, although that figure has not been confirmed.

Triple world champions Sir Jackie Stewart told the Daily Telegraph that he was surprised Kubica was allowed to take part in the event, but understood Renault's dilemma: "You've got to look after that investment. It's quite a challenge to stop drivers doing the things I believe are unwise leading up to a F1 season."

Renault boss Eric Boullier stands by his decision to allow Kubica to take part in such events in his contract. "He could also have been run over by a bus going to get his bread," he said.
