Nick Heidfeld has called on Renault to maximise the potential of its car if it wants to get back among the podium positions.

Renault made a strong start to the season as Vitaly Petrov took third at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix and then Heidfeld followed suit at the next race in Malaysia. Since then, though, the team has slipped off the pace slightly and Heidfeld suffered misfortune when his car caught fire during final practice in Spain - preventing him from participating in qualifying.

Heidfeld said that instead of ruing the difficulties, Renault needs to try and make its own luck in a bid to qualify in more competitive positions.

"There's always room for improvement," Heidfeld said. "And, as a driver, I'm never completely satisfied unless I achieve the absolute maximum - I am always striving for more. I think we did reach our best at the beginning of the season when we got onto the podium two races running, but then on the other hand in a couple of races I have not started at particularly strong places on the grid.

Some of the poorer grid positions have been down to bad luck but I don't feel you can just call it bad luck and leave it there, you could say you make your own luck. There is always room to plan and prepare things differently to avoid getting into those unlucky situations."
