Warrington into Grand Final with win over Huddersfield
Warrington Wolves have booked a spot in the Super League Grand Final for the second successive year after they defeated Huddersfield Giants 30-22 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Two tries apiece from Joel Monaghan and Simon Grix were enough to see off a resilient Giants side, who Warrington had chosen to face in the semi-finals using the Club Call system, having beaten them in the previous eight meetings between the sides.
The opening minutes were a cagey affair, with both sides making early mistakes. The first score came when Giants' Brett Ferres gave away a cheap penalty from which Warrington worked the ball to Monaghan to touch down.
Huddersfield skipper Danny Brough briefly levelled the tie after some calamity Wolves defending before teenager Jake Connor burst past Chris Riley and Ryan Atkins to restore the give the Giants the lead.
It did not last long, as two quick tries - first from Monaghan and then from Grix - sent Warrington in 18-10 up at the break.
Straight from the restart, Atkins collected a cross-field punt from Lee Briers to extend the lead, but Jermaine McGillvary responded immediately to keep Huddersfiled in touching distance.
Then, with 10 minutes left, Dale Ferguson bustled his way through the Warrington defence to reduce the deficit to two points and set up a tense finish, but Grix kept his cool to secure victory for the home side.
The Wolves lost to Leeds in the Final at Old Trafford last season, but will now have the chance to go one better. Leeds face Wigan in the other semi-final on Friday.
