Gavin Henson has confirmed his desire to secure a place in the Wales squad for next year's World Cup.

The centre has not played a competitive rugby match since March 2009 and it had been claimed that he would retire from the game. However, he has now confirmed his intention to make a comeback and has set himself a goal of making a first appearance at a World Cup.

"I've never been to a Rugby World Cup which is coming up in 2011 and I'm thinking about training for that," the Ospreys star said. "Hopefully I can get back into rugby, do well and get into the World Cup squad. It's the one thing that is not on my CV."

Wales coach Warren Gatland would welcome Henson back into the fold, but has called on the 28-year-old to show his commitment.

"If he's going to put himself in the frame it's got to be sooner rather than later," Gatland said. "If it's not until the new year it's potentially going to be too late - he's been out of the game for a while. I haven't spoken to Gavin but it would be great to see him back on the rugby field."
