  • Leicester have denied their interest in Wales and British and Irish Lions' out-half Stephen Jones after being heavily linked with the player.

Scarlets coach Nigel Davies, refused to be drawn on the issue earlier in the week simply saying, "Ask him", while Jones was not available for comment. But one club the 88-capped Welshman would appear not to be joining is the Tigers after their head of rugby operations Simon Cohen said: "Stories linking Scarlets fly-half Stephen Jones with Leicester Tigers are totally unfounded. We are very happy with the fly-half options available in the Tigers squad and we are not looking to recruit another one.

"As far as we are aware, the player is under contract at the Scarlets and it would have been both disrespectful and not the way we do business to have had any discussions with him in any event. Unfounded speculation of this type is not helpful to either club or the player concerned."

  • Brumbies captain Stephen Hoiles has yet to make up his mind over an offer from Stade Francais.

The 28 year old Wallaby has offers on the table from the Parisian club and the Australian Rugby Union and has yet to decide whether to push for a place in Robbie Deans' World Cup squad or make the lucrative move to France. ''I have had some interest from overseas but I'm hoping to stay - firstly in Australia and preferably at the Brumbies,'' Hoiles told The Sun-Herald.

''I'm going through it all at the moment. I'm only just getting into the details now and am waiting to hear back from my manager about where I fit in with the ARU and we'll go from there. I don't really know if I'll be going overseas. Ideally I'd try and hang around for another year and stay for the World Cup. And the Brumbies are great, I love it there. Maybe try and do a two-year deal with an option at the end of next year. If I'd have to take a big pay cut to stay in Australia then I'd probably have to consider going overseas. We'll find out in the next week''

  • Former Australia international Sam Cordingley is one of three new recruits for the new Super 15 franchise the Melbourne Rebels.

The 22 times capped Wallaby joins ex-Western Force and Waratah Tim Davidson and youngster Peter Betham in Melbourne. Coach Rod Macqueen has already secured the signatures of former Australia captain Stirling Mortlock, Wales backrow Gareth Delve and English fly-half Danny Cipriani in Melbourne. He made his debut in 1998 for the Brumbies and has played for the Queensland Reds, Swansea and most recently French club Grenoble.

"After speaking with (coach) Rod Macqueen and (CEO) Brian Waldron about their ideas for taking the club forward, it became a quick decision to join," said in a statement. "Being asked to be one of the founding members of the Melbourne Rebels and to be part of building a culture from scratch is an honour. It's something not many players get the chance to experience."
