Jean-Eric Vergne has been penalised 10 grid places at this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix and Toro Rosso fined €30,000 after a wheel came loose on his car during second practice.

The right rear came off his car after he exited the pits towards the end of the session and the car came to a halt soon after. The FIA have clamped down on such incidents this year and hit Vergne with a 10-place penalty for Sunday's race plus the fine for Toro Rosso.

"This is regarded as a serious offence and the stewards are of the opinion that this was a significant breach of the safety requirements," the stewards' report read.

"The stewards request the FIA technical delegate to satisfy himself as to the compliance of the two Toro Rosso cars with Article 14.7 of the FIA Formula One technical regulations and the technical directive TD/017-13 prior to their further participation in the event."
