Profile

Montpellier flanker Fulgence Ouedraogo was one of four players from his club called up by coach Marc Lièvremont for the 2008 Six Nations Championship, along with fly-half François Trinh-Duc, No.8 Louis Picamoles and scrum-half Julien Tomas. It was seen as a vote of confidence for the previously unfashionable club's youth system.

Ouedraogo, who was born in Burkina Faso, had made his France debut as a replacement in the second Test on tour in New Zealand in June 2007 but he did not make the cut for that year's Rugby World Cup. He had played in the 2006 World Under-21 Championship and met Trinh-Duc when both were youngsters in the Pic-Saint-Loup rugby academy near Montpellier.

Unlike Ibrahim Diarra, the Senegalese flanker from the Montauban club who made his debut in a back row with Ouedraogo and Picamoles against Italy in March 2008, Ouedraogo seems set for a long run in the France squad. He took his total of caps to 11 with appearances against Argentina, the Pacific Islanders and Australia in November 2008.

Ouedraogo played in four of France's five games during their 2010 Six Nations Grand Slam triumph though he failed to feature in any of the national side's games the following year. However, Ouedraogo was in inspired form for his club side Montpellier during their charge to the 2011 Top 14 final. He was forced to sit out the competition finale having sustained a fractured hand in the semi-final.

Going into the build-upo to the 2011 World Cup Ouedraogo was originally an injury worry. But the back-row came back into the first-team in their victory against Ireland at the Aviva Stadium on August 20. Ouedraogo travelled to the 2011 World Cup with France and retained his spot in the squad for the 2012 Six Nations.
