Captain Phil Waugh is set to return for the Waratahs' Super Rugby clash with the Reds on Saturday.

The Waratahs fell to a demoralising 31-17 defeat to the Blues at the weekend. But reinforcements are on their way with Waugh ready to return following a calf injury along with Wycliff Palu and centre Tom Carter.

Coach Chris Hickey confirmed that the trio are approaching full fitness while playmaker Berrick Barnes has been cleared to play by medical staff but the decision as to whether he plays will be left to the fly-half.

''We're hopeful Phil Waugh will be able to play against the Reds, and Tom Carter, both those two have recovered really well,'' Hickey told the Sydney Morning Herald. ''And Cliffy Palu, we'll see early in the week how he is but again we are hopeful.

''It's only early but their recovery has been coming along well, and we won't play until Saturday night. The players we had out there against the Blues were good enough to do the job, and they showed that in the second half, but obviously you'd like guys like Waugh and Palu in your side.''
