Kieran Read will miss the Crusaders' Super Rugby tour of South Africa and Perth with a toe injury sustained in the victory against Southern Kings.

The Crusaders No. 8 and captain has partially torn ligaments in a big toe, and expects to face at least four weeks on the sidelines.

The Crusaders were already due to play the Stormers and the Sharks in South Africa without Dan Carter, who is staying at home to attend the birth of his first child.

"It is hugely disappointing that Kieran cannot join the team to South Africa," Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder said.

"He has been playing some brilliant rugby this season and it is unfortunate that this injury will keep him out of the [tour].''

George Whitelock will take up the captaincy in Read's absence, with Jordan Taufua included in the squad as cover.
