Super 14 points machine Dan Carter has been ruled out of the Crusaders' clash with the Cheetahs on Saturday with a hip injury after failing to pass a fitness test on Friday.

The fly-half became the competition's all-time leading points-scorer last week and he misses out on adding to his personal haul of 1022 in what is expected to be a straight-forward victory for the Crusaders.

Daniel Bowden will try to fill Carter's considerable boots at No.10 while wing Tu Umaga-Marshall joins the reserves bench. Draft recruit Bowden has not been involved in any of the Crusaders' match-day squads this season.

Carter picked up the mysterious injury, which is expected to be only a short-term problem, early in the week. He has experienced a tightening the groin and hip areas that club officials could not confirm the source of. He was tested at the Crusaders captain's run on Friday morning and a decision was made to withdraw him from the match, the Crusaders said in a statement.

Meanwhile, bench halfback Andy Ellis has also been ruled out. He missed last week's win over the Waratahs with concussion and was bracketed with Willi Heinz for Saturday's match, but wasn't deemed ready to return.
