Britain's Elena Baltacha has been dumped out of the Citi Open in the second round as Virginie Razzano stormed to a 6-4 6-2 victory in Maryland, United States.

Baltacha struggled throughout, landing just 50% of first serves and winning a meagre 29% of points on her second serve. The resilient Razzano, meanwhile, battled through nine double-faults, but managed to save seven of nine break points to progress to the quarter-finals.

Should the world No. 81 Frenchwoman defeat Irina Falconi of the United States in the next round, she will reach her first WTA semi-final in more than two years.

Falconi advanced due to China's Shuai Zhang retiring hurt after succumbing to an illness. Zhang had complained of feeling ill on Tuesday following her opening round victory, and after losing the first set 6-4 on Wednesday, was unable to carry on.

Second seed Nadia Petrova continues to impress, cruising to a comfortable 6-2 6-2 win over Canadian Eugenie Bouchard in just 52 minutes to qualify for the final eight. There the Russian will face Bojana Jovanovski after the No. 5 seed edged out Jill Craybas 6-4 5-7 6-4.
