Britain's Anne Keothavong crashed out of the Citi Open after losing her first-round clash against No. 8 seed Alberta Brianti 6-3 6-4.

The first set proved a turbulent affair, with neither player taking the match by the scruff of the neck. There were eight breaks of serve, Keothavong taking three and Brianti claiming the other five.

Keothavong's serve vastly improved in the second as she aimed to grab a foothold in the match, but her lack of penetration on the return was obvious as her opponent comfortably held. One break point was all the Italian needed, sealing her victory and a berth in the second round in an hour and a half.

Meanwhile, it was a largely successful day for the tournament's highest ranked players, as No. 1 seed Shahar Peer saw off Japan's Ryoko Fuda 6-4 6-2, while second seed Nadia Petrova breezed by Alexandra Mueller 6-2 6-2 in just over an hour.

Although the same could not be said of fourth seed Jelena Dokic, who bowed out in the first round with a disappointing straight sets 6-3 6-4 loss to China's Shuai Zhang after landing only 43% of her first serves.
