Britain's Anne Keothavong made an early departure from the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, after being forced to retire during her final round qualifying match against Eleni Daniilidou.

Keothavong won the first set against her Greek opponent, but was left trailing 5-7 7-6(5) 4-1 before leaving the court. The 27-year-old earlier defeated Italian Alberta Brianti during qualification for the WTA Tour tournament, whilst fellow Britons Elena Baltacha and Laura Robson were sent tumbling at the first hurdle.

The early exit in Ohio comes at an inopportune time for Keothavong, with the US Open set to begin in just two weeks. The world No. 98 is currently due to compete in the Texas Open next week in the lead-up to the final grand slam event of the year.
