Serena Williams will have to battle her way to US Open glory after officials resisted the temptation to bump her up the seedings and left her at No. 28.

Williams, who has had a year of injury woe, has returned to something close to her best form with a couple of tournament wins in recent weeks and it prompted talk that she would be catapulted up the seedings on account of her outstanding record at Flushing Meadows.

The seedings committee deliberated long and hard on the matter, but elected to base the seedings on world rankings - with all players below one and two seeds, Caroline Wozniacki and Vera Zvonareva - moving up one on account of the injury to Kim Clijsters.

"After careful deliberation regarding Serena Williams' seeding, we decided to maintain the objective criteria in place to determine the women's singles seeds at this year's US Open," Jim Curley, US Open tournament director and chief professional tournaments officer, USTA, said.
