Michaella Krajicek found herself completely outclassed as favourite Serena Williams powered into round three of the US Open with a 6-0 6-1 win.

Williams is seeded down at 28 following an injury-plagued year, but that is a false ranking and she had nothing more than an afternoon workout as she wrapped up victory in 49 minutes.

Bigger tests will lie ahead, but Williams proved she is in fine form. She started with an ace and it set the tone for the entire match as there were times when the three-time winner looked on a different planet to her opponent.

Krajicek surrendered her opening service game and aside from a break point she had to save in the fifth game, Williams was not tested in an opening set that lasted 22 minutes.

Krajicek ensured there would be no double bagel with a service hold at the start of the second set, but it did not signal a comeback as Williams powered the ball hard off the ground from the baseline on both wings and showed deft touch on the occasions she ventured into the net and wrapped up the win with an ace.

Victoria Azarenka encountered few problems overcoming Argentina's Gisela Dulko in their second round clash. Azarenka, the No. 4 seed, cruised to a 6-4 6-3 victory, despite Dulko hitting more winners during the match.

Francesca Schiavone's serve was in the spotlight following the 16 double faults she sent down in her first-round win over Galina Voskoboeva, but there was no repeat performance as the No. 7 seed produced a polished display in beating Mirjana Lucic. The Italian appeared to suffer something akin to the golfer's yips against Voskoboeva, but she had clearly ironed out the issue on the practice court as she was dominant on serve - sending down just one double - and this enabled her to use her superior groundstrokes to claim a 6-1 6-1 victory.

Jelena Jankovic required extensive treatment on a back complaint, but still had enough in the tank to take care of a misfiring Jelena Dokic 6-3 6-4. The Serb had the trainer out on court on a couple of occasions and also departed to the locker room for a medical timeout. She looked a little restricted in her movement, but Dokic could not capitalise as her serve misfired terribly. Dokic has superb groudstrokes, but she sent down 15 double faults and it was too big a handicap to overcome.

Jankovic's fellow Serb Ana Ivanovic progressed into round three without hitting a ball as her opponent Petra Cetkovska was forced out due to injury.

Italy's No. 18 seed Roberta Vinci proved too good for Alize Cornet, winning 6-2 6-3, while Silvia Soler-Espinosa took the scalp of 31st seed Kaia Kanepi to move into the third round and Andrea Petkovic battled back from a set down to beat Jie Zheng 3-6 6-3 6-3.
