Australia's Sam Stosur stopped the spirited run of Angelique Kerber to book her place in the Us Open final with a 6-3 2-6 6-2 victory.

The players were sent out on Grandstand court due to a scheduling change by the event organisers. It was a controversial decision, but those who were courtside were treated to a delight.

Ninth seeded Stosur took to the court as the overwhelming favourite and lived up to that billing in the first set as she raced through it in 31 minutes.

Stosur has a habit of squandering winning opportunities and she threatened another slip as Kerber produced some stunning hitting to take the second set.

Kerber was unable to sustain the effort and although playing some thrilling points with her back to the wall in the final set, Stosur edged over the line to secure her place in a grand slam final for a second time.

"Playing a semi-final is always difficult compared to any other matches so to get through in pleasing," Stosur said. "It was great playing out there, it was a great crowd, they were vocal and we had a lot of support."

Commenting on being in a final before, Stosur said: "I think it can really help. It is daunting playing your first final. There will be nerves but I have been through it before and I will have a go and hopefully have a good day."
