Laura Robson gave former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic a real run for her money before eventually falling 7-5 6-4 at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

Robson, ranked 146th in the world, gave Maria Sharapova a scare at Wimbledon, and the 17-year-old showed no fear as she started brightly against the Serbian.

Ivanovic claimed a tight opening set, breaking Robson in the final game, but the Brit responded immediately, grabbing a 3-0 lead after an early break in the second set. However, Robson failed to hold on to her advantage, and the 12th seed broke back to level at 3-3 before moving ahead to wrap up the victory in an hour and 28 minutes.

Agnieszka Radwanska avenged her US Open defeat with victory over Angelique Kerber. The German, who made a surprise run to the semi-finals as the world No. 92, beat Radwanska in the second round at Flushing Meadows, and it looked like a repeat was on the cards when Kerber won the opening set. However, the ninth seed battled back to claim a 3-6 6-3 6-3 victory and set up a third-round clash with eighth seed Jelena Jankovic.

Third seed Victoria Azarenka blazed past Irina Camelia Begu 6-1 6-3, and she was joined in the third round by world No. 4 Vera Zvonareva, who defeated Tsvetana Pironkova in straight sets. Zvonareva edged the opening set after a late break, but found little resistance in the second as she streaked to a 7-5 6-0 victory.

Russian No. 11 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova fell 6-4 7-6(6) to American Vania King, while No. 16 seed Shahar Peer was upset by Klara Zakapalova 6-3 6-1.
