Caroline Wozniacki is looking ominous in the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells after stepping up a gear in the deciding set to see off Australian Open semi-finalist Zheng Jie 6-4 4-6 6-1.

With most of the big names falling early, No. 2 seed Wozniacki wasn't about to let an opportunity to move into the last four pass after Zheng fought back to level the match at a set all. The second set featured five service breaks as the players toiled away in the desert heat.

But Danish teenager Wozniacki bounced back the stronger in the conditions, breaking three times to claim her first win over Zheng at the third attempt.

Wozniacki should rise to world No. 3 after the win, with a further jump to No. 2 on the line in her semi-final against her good friend, Agnieszka Radwanska, who moved into the semi-finals with a 6-4 6-3 win over No. 4 seed Elena Dementieva.

Dementieva eased past Aravane Rezai in the previous round but did not serve overly well and Radwanska exposed the chinks in her armour to take the match. Radwanska crafted two break points in the opening set and converted them both.

The second set saw Radwanska play consistent tennis from the back of the court and at times she simply waited for her opponent to make mistakes. A major error came in game six as Dementieva sent a routine forehand over the baseline to hand Radwanska a break.

Dementieva attempted to battle back but she squandered chances in the following game. Dementieva saved a match point on her own serve in game eight, but she could not put any pressure on the Radwanska serve and the Pole closed out the match in an hour and 32 minutes and it was apt that the game was sealed with an error from the Russian's racket.
