British No. 1 Andy Murray has moved back up to third in the world rankings.

Despite only reaching the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open, Murray moves above Rafael Nadal, who dropped points because he failed to defend his title at Indian Wells.

Playing in just his third tournament of the year, Murray blamed lack of match practice for his defeat to Robin Soderling, but now moves on to the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, where he is the defending champion.

"I can't expect to play my best straight after a long break," he said. "But I'm hoping to do so in Miami."

Despite crashing out to Marcos Baghdatis in the second round in California, Roger Federer retains his spot at the top of the world rankings.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga moves back into the top ten at the expense of Fernando Gonzalez, but the biggest mover of the week is Ivan Ljubicic who moves up 13 places to No. 13 after his Indian Wells victory over Andy Roddick.

In the women's rankings Britain's Elena Baltacha moves to a career high of 62 after her victory over Na Li in California, marking her first victory over a top-ten player, but Katie O'Brien drops out of the top 100 to 103.

Following her semi-final appearance at Indian Wells, where she fell to eventual champion Jelena Jankovic, Australia's Sam Stosur has broken into the top ten for the first time.

"It's a great feeling. Obviously, a smaller number next to your name is a great thing," Stosur said. "It has certainly been a goal of mine for a long time. Since I was a little kid I wanted to be Top 10 in the world, and now it has happened."

Jelena Jankovic moves up one place to eighth after her first title since August, while Justine Henin completed her third tournament to move back into the world rankings for the first time since her retirement in 2008. The former world No. 1 is now ranked at No. 33.

Another former No. 1, Ana Ivanovic, dropped out of the top 50 for the first time since 2005.
