Jelena Jankovic rolled back the years as she romped past Caroline Wozniacki 6-2 6-4 to claim the BNP Paribas Open crown at Indian Wells.

The former world No. 1, who has struggled to find form this season, showed glimpses of her best tennis that saw her occupy the top spot for 18 weeks between August 2008 and February 2009.

Despite the defeat, Wozniacki moves to a career-high of No. 2 in the world rankings, but she was far from impressive as she slumped to a first-set defeat in under 40 minutes.

Jankovic, who has failed to reach the quarter-final stages of any tournament in 2010, stormed out of the blocks to take a 4-0 lead in the opening set. Wozniacki finally settled her nerves to hold her third service game, and broke Jankovic to go to 4-2, but the Serb never really looked in any danger of losing the opening set.

Serving for the set, Jankovic did succumb to her nerves momentarily, completely mis-hitting a return shot, and Wozniacki hit a superb cross-court winner to provide some respite, but at the second time of asking Jankovic sealed the opening set.

In a similar vein to the opening set, Wozniacki crumbled as Jankovic created three break points on her serve, and from then on there was little chance of a comeback as the Serb dictated play.

Wozniacki battled hard, but Jankovic had an answer for everything her opponent tried, and she wrapped up the match in an hour and 24 minutes, her first title since August.

"It has been a great two weeks for me, I am just so thrilled to be able to win this title," said Jankovic.

Wozniacki congratulated Jankovic on winning her 12th WTA title and admitted she made too many errors.

"Jelena played a good match today," she said. "She didn't make a lot of mistakes. I tried to change it when I saw it was not going way but I just made a few too many errors at the important points. I couldn't really get to play the game that I wanted to play, and Jelena took advantage of that."
