Andy Murray has held his hands up and made clear his regret after sniping at a female umpire during the BNP Paribas Open.

Playing in a doubles match alongside brother Jamie earlier this week, Murray lost his cool when he felt the official had taken too long to rule on a questionable line call.

"I felt bad and I looked like an idiot because I was arguing with a lady," Murray said. "I looked like an idiot and I'm not. I just wanted to get clarification on the rule and no-one even knows it."

The Murrays fell 6-7 7-6 10-5 in the contest against No. 2 seeds Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor, completing a miserable tournament for the world No. 4.

Murray crashed out of the singles competition with a second-round defeat to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. It was the second time in as many years he had fallen at that hurdle.
