Stosur outguns Baltacha in Paris
US Open champion Sam Stosur brought Elena Baltacha's French Open campaign to an abrupt halt as the Australian sailed through their opening-round encounter on Sunday.
The British No. 1 battled valiantly, but bowed out in straight sets as Stosur claimed a 6-4 6-0 victory at Roland Garros.
Stosur, who reached the final in Paris two years ago, demonstrated her clay-court prowess as she raced to a 3-0 lead. Baltacha settled her nerves as she got on the scoreboard to trail 3-1, but some supreme serving saw Stosur have the chance to serve for the set at 5-3.
But a rare wobble from the world No. 6 handed Baltacha a lifeline - a double fault gifted the Scot a break, giving her the chance to get back on level terms. However, Baltacha was unable to hold onto her serve as Stosur grabbed the opener.
The second set started in a similar vein to the first as Stosur grabbed an early break to take a 3-0 lead, but unlike the first set, Baltacha was unable to get a footing and was helpless to prevent an increasingly confident Stosur streaking away to victory.
Baltacha saved two match points as she desperately tried to stave off defeat, but Stosur eased to victory in a shade over an hour. Next up for the Australian No. 1 is American Irina Falconi, who battled from a set down to defeat Edina Gallovits-Hall 3-6 6-3 6-1.
