What They Said
Laura Robson's luck ran out at the French Open as she bowed out with a first-round defeat to Anabel Medina Garrigues at Roland Garros.
Robson, who fell in the final round of qualifying last week but was handed a place in the main draw as a lucky loser, battled valiantly but was well beaten by the veteran Spaniard who claimed a 6-2 6-1 victory.
The former Wimbledon girls' champion got off to a shaky start as Medina Garrigues grabbed an early break, streaking to a 3-0 lead. Robson recovered well to claim a confidence-boosting love service game to keep herself in the set, and set about putting her opponent's serve under pressure, but the Spaniard held firm to lead 4-1.
A booming forehand saw Robson with a chance to break back, but she was left to rue her inability to take her chances, and Medina Garrigues' clay-court prowess proved decisive as she grabbed a second break to wrap up the opening set.
Robson was left with a mountain to climb after finding herself 3-0 down in the second set, and seeing a third break point pass her by, the error count began to creep up as Medina Garrigues tightened her grip on the match.
Robson avoided the bagel by holding serve late in the second set, but on her tenth appearance at Roland Garros, Medina Garrigues was composed as she closed out the victory in an hour and 10 minutes.
