Andy Murray, who showed his injury woes were behind him with an impressive win over Santiago Giraldo, said: "It was very hot so I warmed up very quickly. I'm feeling better than I did, but that's because of all the work my physio has done in the last 48 hours.

"I felt like I moved pretty well. When you are playing slams you have just got to take each day as it comes - I'm hoping that tomorrow I will feel good again."

Rafael Nadal will face Juan Monaco after defeating Eduardo Schwank, but the Spaniard is not looking past his seeded opponent. He said: "I have started well the tournament - into the second week now, that is the most important thing.

"Now I have a big confrontation against Monaco. He is having a fantastic season."

David Ferrer produced arguably the performance of the tournament so far to beat Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets, and said afterwards: "I think I managed to keep my focus throughout the match. It was very important to start well, and I had to start attacking and play very high balls. All the points were good for me. I'm very satisfied.

"I will try to focus only on the next match against Marcel Granollers or Paul-Henri Mathieu. And I don't want to think about if I will win Roland Garros. I will have to play semi-final, quarter-final. For me, the most important is the next match.''

Youzhny explained why he chose to write an apology in the clay: "There was a lot of people. That's why I write 'sorry'. Because I can't show them a nice game. The way we played in the beginning, it was not really interesting for people."

Maria Sharapova has lost just five games across her three matches to date, as she beat Shuai Peng 6-2 6-1 on Saturday. The Russia - who is looking to complete the career grand slam - won't be apologising for her efficiency, however. She said: "The last thing that's on my mind when I'm going out on court is thinking about who paid for a ticket and how long they're going to watch my match for. I mean, I'm not sure if that's selfish or not, but my job is to go out on the court and to try to win. Whether it's 6-0, 6-0, whether it's a tough three-set match, you're trying to do what you have to do."

Janko Tipsarevic, after taking care of home favourite Julien Benneteau: "I'm delighted to win in three sets, it wasn't easy playing against a local hero on a big court where I've never played before. I'm really happy how I managed to play; winning in straight sets is really important because I need to be ready for my next round.

"Every time I got a short ball I was going for the down-the-line shots, and combined with the good serve it kind of paid off."

Petra Kvitova dropped a set before getting past Nina Bratchikova and tweeted: "So happy to be through to 4R, was a tough match and Nina played very well. Now rest, recovery and on to the next one!"

Defending champion Li Na survived losing the first set against Christina McHale to progress and said: "In the first set, I just followed her [McHale]. In the second set I was able to play my way. McHale is a dangerous player. I am happy to win because I had more experience."
