Heather Watson went out of the AEGON International in the second round on Wednesday, losing 7-6(5) 6-1 to Lucie Safarova in Eastbourne.

The Brit took the first set to a tiebreak as she worked her opponent - seeded seventh in the competition - hard, but was eventually overcome 7-5 in the decider and was then comfortably beaten in the second set as she rounded off her final action prior to Wimbledon.

Fellow Brit Laura Robson suffered a similar fate at the hands of Ekaterina Makarova, who had dumped Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova out of the first round on Tuesday, as she went down 6-4 7-5 at the hands of her Russian opposite.

Fourth seed Marion Bartoli produced a controlled and swift despatch of Aleksandra Wozniak with a 6-2 6-2 win, and fifth seed Angelique Kerber made light work of Chanelle Scheepers, beating the South African 6-3 6-2 to progress to the next round without a hitch.

Christina McHale, who beat Caroline Wozniacki on Tuesday, was unable to repeat her winning form against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova as she was on the wrong end of a 7-5 3-6 6-4 scoreline.

And eighth seed Daniela Hantuchova was the biggest faller of the day, losing 6-4 3-6 6-1 to Tamira Paszek.
