Sam Stosur had fire in her eyes as she blazed into the second round on the opening day at Wimbledon with a dominant straight-sets victory over Carla Suarez Navarro.

The Australian has never made it past the third round at the All England Club and had won just five matches in nine previous Wimbledon appearances, but showed no signs of a grass-court aversion as she powered to a 6-1 6-3 victory in a little over an hour.

The No. 5 seed, fresh from a semi-final appearance at the French Open earlier this month, got off to a blistering start, racing to a 5-0 lead before her Spanish opponent could settle. Stosur had set point on Suarez Navarro's third service game, but the world No. 40 hung on to avoid the first-set whitewash.

An early break in the second put Stosur firmly on course for victory, and although Suarez Navarro presented the US Open champion with greater resistance, Stosur never looked troubled on her serve as she strolled to victory. She awaits either Arantxa Rus or Misaki Doi in the second round.

Li Na remains Stosur's likely fourth-round opponent - should the Australian reach the last 16 for the first time - after the Chinese No. 1 saw off Ksenia Pervak in straight sets. Li, who was dumped out by eventual semi-finalist Sabine Lisicki in the second round last year, eased into the second round with a 6-3 6-1 victory.

Third seed Agnieszka Radwanska kicked off her Wimbledon campaign in convincing fashion as she claimed a 6-3 6-3 victory against Magdalena Rybarikova, while last year's semi-finalist Sabine Lisicki strolled to a 6-4 6-2 win over Petra Martic.

The first seed to tumble was No. 16 seed Flavia Pennetta, who was ousted by fellow Italian Camila Giorgi, the world No. 145 claiming a shock 6-4 6-3 victory. No. 27 seed Daniela Hantuchova also departed, losing 6-4 7-6(1) to Jamie Hampton.
