Roger Federer continued his bid for a seventh Wimbledon title as he marched into the third round with frightening efficiency.

With Prince Charles watching on from the Royal Box, Federer put on a masterclass in grass court tennis to send Fabio Fognini packing with a 6-1 6-3 6-2 victory.

Federer, who was forced to play his opening match on Court No. 1 for the first time since 2003, returned to Centre Court to seal another routine victory.

Having raced past Albert Ramos for the loss of just three games on Monday, Federer got off to an equally fast start against Fognini, breaking the Italian in his opening service game. Fognini showed some impressive defence to hold in his next, but failed to get another game on the board as Federer swept through the opening set.

The world No. 3, who is bidding to reclaim the title he last won in 2009, was firing on all cylinders as he hit 35 winners, and he tightened his grip on the match when he broke for an early lead in the second. The Swiss never faced a break point in the match as he strolled towards victory.

Fognini managed to stay on level terms in the third set to keep himself in the match, but a superb backhand down the line saw Federer break for a 4-2 lead, and the outcome was never in doubt as the Swiss wrapped up an impressive victory in an hour and 13 minutes.

Next up for Federer is Frenchman Julien Benneteau, who defeated American Michael Russell 7-6(4) 2-6 6-4 7-5.

No. 8 seed Janko Tipsarevic recovered from losing the opening set to defeat Ryan Sweeting 5-7 7-5 6-4 6-2 while Richard Gasquet eased into the third round with a 6-3 6-4 6-4 win over Ruben Bemelmans.

Meanwhile, the talented but volatile Latvian Ernests Gulbis, who stunned sixth seed Tomas Berdych in the opening round, lived up to his reputation as he was ousted by Polish qualifier Jerzy Janowicz.

Juan Monaco booked his place in the third round with a 6-2 3-6 6-3 7-6(0) win over Jeremy Chardy, while Florian Mayer saw off fellow German Philipp Petzschner 3-6 6-4 6-2 6-4.

In the other half of the draw, Andy Murray learnt the identity of his second round opponent after the big-serving Ivo Karlovic claimed a 6-4 6-4 7-6(5) win over Dudi Sela.

David Ferrer moved into the second round with a 7-6(5) 6-4 6-4 win over Dustin Brown, while Milos Raonic needed one game to close out a 6-4 6-4 6-4 win over Santiago Giraldo. No. 25 seed Stanislas Wawrinka was dumped out by Jurgen Melzer, while Lukasz Kubot and Bjorn Phau also posted first-round wins.
