Maria Sharapova's bid to win back-to-back grand slams was shattered as she was sent crashing out of Wimbledon by Sabine Lisicki.

The German avenged her semi-final defeat at the All England Club last year as she claimed a 6-4 6-3 victory on Court One.

Sharapova, who had never lost to Lisicki in three previous meetings, looked to be on course to extend her unbeaten record when she broke the No. 15 seed in her opening service game.

But Lisicki, who reached the last four at Wimbledon last year before she was ousted by Sharapova, responded immedately before racing to a 4-1 lead. Sharapova did threaten to launch a comeback when she broke Lisicki as she served for the set, but the German held her nerve to see out the opener.

After a brief rain delay the players returned to court and it was Lisicki who quickly found her range to grab an early break of serve, and didn't face a single break point as she confidently wrapped up victory inside an hour and a half.

Lisicki will face Angelique Kerber in an all-German quarter-final after the No. 8 seed brought an end to Kim Clijsters' Wimbledon campaign. Clijsters, who has confirmed she will retire later this summer, was outgunned as Kerber powered to a 6-1 6-1 victory.
