Wozniacki powers into semis

Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki showed impressive mental toughness to beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and move into the semi-finals of the MPS Group Championships in Florida.

The top seed raced to the first set, but an early break in the second allowed Pavlyuchenkova back into the match. But the Danish world No. 2 won six games on the trot to wrap up the victory.

Wozniacki will now meet fourth seed Elena Vesnina, who cruised past crowd favourite Melanie Oudin 6-2 6-1.

Third seed Dominika Cibulkova looked in ominous form as she moved past Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak 7-5 6-1. She will meet Olga Govortsova in the second semi-final after the Russian booked her place in the last four with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Varvara Lepchenko.

Top seed Victoria Azarenka crashed out of the Andalucia Tennis Experience in Marbella after she pulled out of her quarter-final against Maria Jose Martinez-Sanchez.

The Belarusian was leading 4-0 but a leg injury forced her to hand the walkover to the fifth seed. Martinez-Sanchez will meet fellow Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro after the eighth seed recovered from losing the first set to beat Tatjana Malek 4-6 6-1 6-2.

Second seed Flavia Pennetta moved through to the semi-finals unscathed after a 6-4 7-6(4) victory over Simona Halep. She will face Sara Errani after the Italian battled back from the to beat Spanish qualifier Beatriz Garcia Vidagany.
